Better Late Than Never - 1/4

Writer's picture: AndreaAndrea

Yesterday at 11:30am, Kiss was brought in due to suspicious behaviour. 23 days late aside,

she was acting more bizarre than usual, but did settle into her regular mood shortly after she was brought back in. Her shape changed drastically and we knew that FINALLY we were about to have our first foal. But nothing happened. We went about our day and watched the Superbowl. The weather turned and I ended up dragging cars out of the driveway with the tractor, so it was relatively eventful.

Everyone went home and I returned to my shed (studio/bedroom) and wrote out my NaMoPaiMo entry of the day, which happened to be about painting. Upon pressing submit, at nearly 2:30am, a bizarre noise came over the baby monitor. Something between a waterfall and a balloon popping. I didn't hold my breath because this exact sound is what Ellie peeing sounds like... but then the groaning began. I suited up and wandered out, skeptical from the last false alarms. Besides, the alarm didn't sound at all from the FoalAlert.

Though the alarm didn't sound, Kiss was definitely in foaling mode. No signs of an actual

foal yet but foaling nonetheless. She needed some help and we pulled out a small bay colt. Kiss is a maiden so she took a look at her new baby and was understandably uneasy. The little one jumped up (with assistance) and instantly began exploring, while Kiss rested in the straw and gave us a mortified stare. Really, baby was far more in the know than mom and she was too nervous to let him nurse. Three hours later, she finally threw in the towel (after he kept chasing her). Mom and baby are officially doing great and we don't foresee any issues, but our vet will swing by today and give them both a checkup today.

So please welcome our first foal of 2018 - a colt (to be named).
