Not once have I mentioned about the mares and their 2021 foaling choices. I haven't really updated about the 2020 foals either... and for a blog that is called 'The Foal Watch', this is unacceptable.
Here is a quick update:
All of our 2020 foals; P'li, Casper, and Viktor sold in January as weanlings for... rock bottom prices. Our first mistake was selecting a promising stallion who was sitting on the bubble (Cairo Prince), who ended up turning into an unfavourable choice. Our second mistake was doing that twice... P'li and Casper were both by Cairo Prince. Viktor was by Sky Mesa, an unfavourable older stallion, but be purchased him in foal with his mom, Casey's Dreamin'. We also sold Erma Lee (mother to Salem [Cairo Prince], Haku [Klimt], and P'li [Cairo Prince].
Azula retired from racing and has joined the broodmare band.
Tzarina, our useless 3 year old racing filly also retired to join the broodmare band.
Incidental Kiss:
Our first mare to foal this year, she is the mother of Ichiban (Tapiture), Yuki (Outwork), and Casper (Cairo Prince). She is currently in foal to Flameaway and due early/ mid March. She will be returning to him again for a 2022 foal.
Selected foal names:
No idea's yet.
Casey's Dreamin':
Casey has had a lot of foals, this will be her 10th! Viktor was her last foal who sold for more than all of our other 2020 horses. She is currently in foal to Yoshida, which I am so excited about. She will not be bred back again this year because she is due at the end of May, we are resetting her and giving her a vacation.
Selected foal names:
Colt: Shogun
Filly: Fujoshi (Foo/ Fuji)
A.A. Azula's Arch:
After retirement, Azula was bred to More Than Ready. She is due mid/ late March, and will be rebred to the amazing Megdaglia D'Oro. This will be her first foal. We are extremely excited about these combinations, but likely we will be selling both foals as Azula is too valuable. Alas, maybe one day we will keep one of hers.
Selected foal names:
Colt: Zuko
Filly: Sapphire
If you don't get the reference for the foal names, we can't be friends anymore.
A.A. Tzarina:
Tzarina was a terrible racehorse, our worst ever. However, her pedigree is stellar with Curlin as her father and a new track record setting champion for a mother. With all that in mind, we are keeping it simple for her first foal to see where we stand. She is being bred to the controversial Kentucky Derby winner, Country House.
A.A. Flaxen Queen:
A few days ago, Fast Anna was euthanized due to laminitis. This was a heavy blow to everyone, including Flax because he was her stallion of choice. She has her Fast Anna filly, A.A. Fast Lida, and her Klimt colt, Alex. She has been having fertility issues the last two years and this is her last hurrah before becoming a riding horse. She is instead going to Country House. If she does not get in foal this year, she will be retired and I will try her out as a riding horse.
With 3 this year and 5 to foal next year, and maybe the purchase of some new horses, it will be quite busy for us!
Updates will come as soon as the foals are born!
