Little Tiger - 2/4

It's been a wild ride these foalings. After a long drought of nothing, we are getting births back to back. I already posted about the little colt born yesterday morning, but we got another today. This time a very leggy filly who is just as plain as her father, mother, and half brother.

My family came to visit the newborn colt (not me lol) and we ate dinner in the barn to celebrate his arrival. Everyone left at

11pm and I wandered out to check on the herd. Apart from helping baby stand

up to nurse and poking my head over the doors, there wasn't much going on. I retreated to the warmth of the house to get some emails answered. At the strike of midnight the FoalAlert sounded and I headed out. I suspected another false alarm since I had just been out to check and heard nothing over the monitor, but instead I was greeted with a brand new

foal already on the ground. The little one was getting a thorough cleaning compliments of mom and was already trying to stand.

It took her over an hour but she finally sorted out her long deer-like legs. Mom was very patient and calm throughout and didn't mind us checking on her baby. Little baby ended up being a girl (the first daughter for this mare), and she also turned out to be extremely feisty. Helping her to stand was an ordeal as she kept bucking and kicking out. Before she was nursing, she was already cantering around the stall. We graced her with the name Taiga (little tiger) and we can already tell that she will outshine her older brother when it comes to trouble.

Though the birth was smooth, she has a few issues like an umbilical hernia (which should sort itself out), contracted tendons, and a near fever. We are optimistic that she is just sorting her body out but the vet is making a second visit tomorrow to check up on her and to get some routine x-rays done on her big brother, Cash.
