Progress - A NaMoPaiMo Post

Writer's picture: AndreaAndrea

This has been one of the busiest weeks of my life, I swear. The three foals have left me drained and as a result, I haven't touched my NaMoPaiMo model... until today.

Now that the foals are decently independent (with me popping in every few hours to make sure everyone is okay), I have finally had time to catch up on some sleep and paint. So today I rolled up my sleeves and kept working on my practice models. I began last week working on my mini medallions and draft, but after my draft kept falling over I put him on the back burner. However, he has now resurfaced.

I originally was planning to have him

painted as a blood bay... but i may have made his base coat too dark, so instead he is marching towards a dark bay.

I accidentally made the same mistake on my arabian medallion. I was looking for a dark bay but suddenly made an oops when he was still wet... so I suppose I now have a sunburnt black? These are happy

accidents though and I'm still quite pleased with how they're turning out. But

so far, my pride and joy is my stock horse medallion. I was aiming to make him a silver grulla.... but I suppose he's come out more yellow dun? In any case, he's my first attempt at a cream base and I'm pretty proud! Though... my boyfriend clearly doesn't understand the difference between grey and grulla (or I'm just bad at colours). Despite this, I'm still pretty proud.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I use oils so the drying time is glacial. Even when I finished the next layer for my three practice pones, I decided to take the plunge and started on Knickers. With some practice under me, I realized that because Knickers is a light bay, I really had to lighten up the base coat. So behold, here she is in her super ugly, semi naked, base coat stage. The horror.

I think if I can stay on track, Knickers will be done on time for NaMoPaiMo (so long as she doesn't fall over like my draft or something). I just hope they can all dry overnight so I can move onto their next layers tomorrow.

Meanwhile, after working on all four projects, I was still itching to be artistic. I really should have been working on a logo for my model horse show coming up, buuut my paints were already out and my tablet wasn't. I haven't painted on canvas in about two years, and my last attempt was about cows. For someone who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, I really don't paint much... or draw much... or do anything with my degree really. But it did feel pretty alright to do a little doodle painting of Ichiban within 2 hours. Bonus, I already had all of these colours on my pallet from painting my models. I'm a little rusty but it was quite fun.
