We are 4 days away from Kiss's due date. About 2 weeks from Millie's, and a month or two away from Ellie and Flax. Yesterday we had a January thaw that brought us up to 8 degrees C and melted most of our snow, and we were pretty sure that would encourage the mares to do something.
I left home at 4:30am and went into work. I arrived home at 7pm completely drained and wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and hibernate for the rest of the winter. I forced myself to stay up until 1am so i could convince myself to wander out to the barn once in a while (in the rain) and scope things out. It was my 1am check that revealed Millie on the ground appearing like she was going into labour. Though extremely excited, my body was crying for sleep.
Millie is a veteran broodmare with two healthy sons already so we aren't very worried about her. After she spotted me at the door she got up and wandered over. Both Kiss and Millie are armed with foal alert systems so we will be alerted when something is happening. In this case there was no alarm was triggered and no sign of a foal yet. I wrapped her tail and made a retreat back to the house to give her privacy. I checked on her every hour until 7:30am... and nothing happened. Finally I gave up and went to sleep since someone would be by to check on her at 8:30am.
It's now 2:15pm and she is still holding out on us... and now the cold weather is back and it brought a blizzard.
