After a long drought, the rains have come. In 3 days we have gotten 3 foals and we still have one more to go. This morning at 8:30am our mare Erma Lee (Ellie) went into labour and popped out a very large colt who we have named Salem. If you can make out how dark he actually is, he is probably going to turn grey just like dad.
Salem is a very special colt because his father is Cairo Prince and his grandfather is
Pioneer of the Nile. That means that his uncle is American Pharaoh, triple crown
winner and breeders cup winner.
I tried to keep the Egyptian theme going with names for this little family but I wasn't feeling the Gods or cities... but I did scroll through some Arabic names and came upon Salem which means peaceful. This little colt isn't like Ichiban or Taiga, he's very quiet and laid back so we thought that
it suited him. Bonus, there is a town about 20 min away with the same name... though I believe it has more to do with witches/ witchcraft...
Sorry for such poor quality photos, I ran out the door as soon as he was up and nursing for work. I hope to get nice pics outside tomorrow if mom and baby are up to it! Also, this little dude throws off my painting schedule even more :') but it should be a quiet night tonight as Flax shouldn't foal just yet.
