The Mobile Studio - Tour

Writer's picture: AndreaAndrea

I move around a lot between two houses; the city and the country. I driving back and forth at least once a week, sometimes more depending on what's happening at work. With the constant moving around, having studio space is a total pain! The constant packing and unpacking of materials (another reason why jumping ship from oil paints was a good idea) is annoying and unproductive. But, alas I can't avoid the constant moving back and forth, so without further delay, here is a mini studio tour of the areas that I work in.

The City

My father is less than thrilled that I have studio space in his city house. I'm sure he would rather me doing spreadsheets for fun or something equally as painful. The set up I have here is basic and I don't store anything. Everything on this desk gets packed up and taken with me. Though I don't store anything here, this is where my entire collection lives. This is a 100% dry studio; I don't paint anything here (NaMoPaiMo is the exception) as everything is digital. When I have to use sprays like Dullcote, I use the mud room and open all the windows. The bonus of this space is that I am in range of unlimited online food delivery!

The Country

This is my "official" studio space. Funny that it is because I'm almost never here and when I am, I'm usually too busy to paint! My art supplies get stored here but my models do not. This shed is also my bedroom, so using solvents is a nightmare. This summer, the plan is to expand into the garage next door and have that part as my wet studio with ventilation. Also, this desk photo is from two years ago (NaMoPaiMo), so the set up is

a little different now.

When I have friends over, I migrate to the house and use the kitchen table (my family's nightmare). My shed is too small and dark for more than one person to work in. Sprays are done in the basement since spraying outside is either too cold, snowy, rainy, windy, dusty, etc. I have had a lot of model casualties spraying outside. Again, I hope to solve this by having my wet studio finished.

Travel Light

The way I travel between locations isn't elaborate, but I do try and travel light. I have a backpack for my laptop and chargers, a common art box for prepping supplies, and a carpet bag for dry pigments, etc. I try and keep it to the 3 items with my models inside them but packed in containers.
